I can't apply a surface or style to a cabinet

To "paint" a texture onto a section face, open the Format Cabinet property sheet of the cabinet in question, by right-clicking cabinet placed on drawing and selecting "Format ...".

Make sure you are not accidentally editing the Cabinet Tool - the property sheet should have Format Cabinet as the title and NOT "Format Cabinet Tool".

Change to the Faces category group, then click the Face Texture page. After you have set all the options, make sure you click the Make All The Same button if required. This will apply the same texture to every face of the section. A common cause of not seeing the expected result is that only one face of each section has been set. Also make sure that CabMasterPro displays a preview of the texture; this will assure you that the format of the graphic is correct and CabMasterPro can load it properly.
